House of Thai Artisans

Learn classical Thai arts from Ajarn Kridakorn Sodprasert (Ajarn Lek) in a quiet, friendly environment.

On the beaten track, but a little hard to find, Baan Chang Thai is a great place to learn Muay Chaiya. It's where I learnt, and many people travel each year (both Thai and western) to learn from Ajarn Lek. Not only is it a place for learning Muay Chaiya, but other Thai arts such as tapestry and puppet making are also on the menu.

Lessons include:

  • Art for kids
  • Painting with water-colours
  • Classical Thai Tapestry painting
  • Classical Thai Puppet making
  • Muay Thai Chaiya

Learning at Baan Chang Thai

Ekkemai 10/2, Sukhumvit, Bangkok

Ajarn Lek's method of teaching Muay Chaiya gave me great respect for the art, as he focuses of the basics and fundamental techniques so that:

1) None of the details (and there are many) that make the style strong are missed
2) You gain the body feel required to be able to use the style effectively and intuitively
3) As in all traditional martial arts, part of the time spent learning is also to enable you to grasp some of the underlying spiritual and ethical nuances, and hopefully shape you into a balanced person (who will not misuse the art, and have a bad attitude.. ie go round with your mouth flapping wildly)
4) THERE IS NO GROUNDWORK (grappling) which is emphasized by the hard floor that we train on! Muay Chaiya is primarily a striking art, and this is what it is good for. There is a lot of hand work, and a good Chaiya fighter is just as good with his fists as he is with his feet.
5) Whilst the teaching is very rigid on technique, Ajarn Lek considers that once you have the Chaiya 'heart' then a lot of the details become second nature, and true expression of the style can begin.

The ambiance at Baan Chang Thai, is very friendly, and anyone is welcome to come and learn. They even have an open door policy, so that people (as long as they are respectful etc) can come and train with the equipment at any time for free. Unfortunately there are only a few people at Baan Chang Thai who train enough and have the experience to be able to really compete or fight professionally, but there are many capable students.

People of different styles are welcome to come, and the students are always keen to learn details an insights from other kinds of Martial Arts. Likewise, many types of people come and learn, from young to old, both men and women, who want to learn Muay Thai, but are put off by the image of modern Muay Thai camps.

Class Prices

All classes are 2 hours long, and all students have free use of equipment and gym at any time of the day.

About Ajarn Lek

He's a great guy with a big heart, who is passionate that Muay Chaiya should be taught in the traditional manner as he was taught not only by Kruu Tong, but by a  Ajarn Kaet Siriapai (please check this blog for a more detailed account). As a sidenote, I do consider Ajarn Lek to be a master in the classical sense, as he not only teaches Muay Thai, but several other traditional Thai arts and so he is a well balanced and rounded individual, and not just someone who teaches fighting for a living! This may also account for Baan Chang Thai's lack of exposure, and difficulty to find.

Dear Simone,

All prices etc are above, we are currently working on
accommodation in the area, but for now I'm afraid you'll have to find a
guesthouse/ hotel for yourself.

It's a good point, and I'll get onto Baan Chang
Thai about sorting something more definite out.

I hope you have a good time
training in August.

Hi , I am arriving in Bangkok on August 22. I would like to train with you
there. Your 12 classes for 2400. Are the 2400 baht classes only held on Friday
and Saturday from 5:30pm to 7:30pm ? Are the 10,000 baht private classes ( 12
in total) 2 hours each time ?

I know the Emporium shopping complex in
Bangkok...how far are you from there by taxi in terms of time and Taxi fare ?
What is the closest sky train to you ?

I look forward to training
Thank you
very much

Hi man,

thank you very much for this website, I got many information about muay
chaiya before flight to Thailand, I come every years in Thailand and now I'm in.
I met Kru Lek last week and I'll go to try tomorrow, What do you think about Kru
Preang? And I know a third muay chaiya school in Bangkok
www.sriwanachaiyarat.com. There are a lot of videos on youtube about this school
and the Ajarn looks good, and his prices is cheaper than Kru Preang and Kru lek.
I got some VCD about this school and it looks good teaching too.

I'd like to
have your opinion about that.

thank you to read me and hope that you'll answer
me here or by email, it's up to you.

Chuen  - Muay thai or muay chaiya   |2010-02-17 06:02:11
I stumbled upon Muaychaiya & found it quite interestin& practical. Still I havnt
decided whether to join chayyai camp in Chiangmai, or go for muay chaiya. Or
perhaps go to chayyai then muay chaiya on the next vacation,or vice versa.

I'm
wonderin if u r familiar w BaanChangThai. if they hav accommodatn on or around
their premises that's cheap. I'll take a mth off fr work&stay in thailand to
train as a total beginner.

Btw, do u know Sri wana chaiya rat as well? Happen
to come across their site, wonder if they are also a muay chaiya institute.. the
site is mostly in thai lang.so I cldn't understand them (altho I do know some
basic thai).. some really cool videos. Hope U can help, thx

Hey guys, sorry for no reply, the comments system on my site isn't notifying me
of new comments :(

Please contact me directly at nathan@mymuaychaiya.com if
you have direct questions.

But in brief as far as accommodation goes, there's a
cheap hotel not far down the road which has rooms for 340 and 380THB per night.
At the moment, there is no special accommodation organised, but hopefully this
will be dealt with shortly.

I hope this helps!

Dear Ajarn,

I was at your gym in 2003 for 3 month with private training. I
was there for my practical of the study of business informatics at siemens
company.

You've told me that I will come back to germany to open a gym in the
future, but i didn't believe you at this time.

Now, 7 years later, I'm
Professional World Champion in Kickboxing Lowkick -83kg WKA and run a Gym since
2006.

Thanx a lot for your kind support at my time at your training base Baan
Chang Thai.

Best regards to Dae, the young one who was studying architcture.
It was a great pleasure for me to got to know you.

Take care and good luck to
you and all you love.

Best regards

Christian "Doubledragon"
